At Fenway Park, the details do not line up neatly. Left field has the Green Monster. Right field has Pesky's Pole. The shape of the field changes the way you watch the game: a fly ball that looks routine at another park can hold your attention all the way to the wall here.
Give yourself time to see the park, choose a seat with care, and settle in for a few innings. Fenway's history is a large part of its appeal, but so is the chance to watch today's Red Sox in the same small, unusual space.
See the wall before you sit on it
The Green Monster rises more than 37 feet above left field. Its scale makes more sense when you can see it across the grass than when you are looking down from the seats on top. A Monster ticket can be a special treat, but you do not need one to appreciate the wall.
If you want the history as well as the game, consider a stadium tour. Check the Red Sox tour calendar for the date you are visiting; available routes and access can vary. A tour and a game also ask different things of your feet, so leave a proper break between them.

Check the exact seat, not just the section
An old ballpark deserves a careful seat purchase. Look for obstruction notices, compare the row, and inspect an actual view when the ticket map provides one. Ask the ticket office about any uncertainty before paying, especially if your party needs more legroom or a route with fewer stairs.
Decide whether you want to watch pitches closely or see the whole field. Compare the actual views with the person coming with you; the famous section may appeal to one of you more than the other.

The station called Fenway is only one option
Kenmore and Fenway stations both serve the park on foot; Lansdowne is the nearby commuter rail stop. Check the MBTA's route planner for your starting point and date. Do the return journey too, particularly for a night game or a trip that requires a commuter rail connection.
Arrive in the neighborhood with time to eat or walk before entering. Leave room for security and finding your section, so you can stop for that first view of the field.

Keep the evening simple
A Fenway Frank is a perfectly reasonable place to start. Pick up dinner before you settle in, then see how an inning plays out against those walls and corners. There is a lot to watch between the pitches.
Pack for the evening as well as the trip in. An extra layer can make a cool night more comfortable; a day game calls for some thought about direct sun. Once you have found your row and everyone has settled down, take another look across the field. The park's odd proportions feel a little more familiar after you have watched baseball move through them.
