How many teams make the MLB playoffs in 2026?

Twelve teams qualify for the 2026 MLB postseason, with six from each league. The field includes all six division winners and six Wild Card teams.

Each league runs through the same bracket. The American League winner and National League winner meet in the World Series.

• American League: three division winners and three Wild Card teams.
• National League: three division winners and three Wild Card teams.
• Total field: 12 teams.

How the six playoff seeds work in each league

The three division winners take seeds 1 through 3, ordered by record. The three non-division winners with the best records take seeds 4 through 6.

A Wild Card team can finish with a better record than a division winner and still receive a lower seed. Winning a division takes priority for seeds 1 through 3.

• No. 3: remaining division winner.
• No. 4: Wild Card team with the best record.

Which teams get first-round byes?

Seeds 1 and 2 in each league skip the Wild Card Series and advance to the Division Series. That gives four teams first-round byes across MLB.

The No. 3 division winner does not receive a bye. It hosts the No. 6 Wild Card team in the opening round.

How the Wild Card Series and bracket work

The opening round has two best-of-three series in each league. Seed 3 hosts seed 6, and seed 4 hosts seed 5. The higher seed hosts every game, so there is no travel within a Wild Card Series.

MLB does not reseed the bracket after that round. The 4-versus-5 winner advances to face seed 1, while the 3-versus-6 winner advances to face seed 2.

• No. 4 vs. No. 5: best of three, all games at the No. 4 seed's park.
• Two wins advance a team to the Division Series.
• The bracket stays fixed; teams are not reseeded.

How many games are in each MLB playoff round?

The Wild Card Series is best of three, and the Division Series is best of five. The League Championship Series and World Series are best of seven.

The higher seed has home-field advantage in the Division Series and League Championship Series. World Series home field goes to the pennant winner with the better regular-season record, not the higher league seed.

What happens when teams finish tied?

MLB no longer plays a Game 163 to settle a division title, Wild Card place, or seed. Regular-season results break the tie before the postseason begins.

For a two-team tie, MLB first checks the head-to-head record. If the teams remain tied, the next checks are intradivision record, intraleague record, and then later portions of the intraleague schedule. Multi-team ties use related record-based steps.

Which regular-season rules change in October?

Postseason extra innings do not start with an automatic runner on second base. Teams play from empty bases until the game ends unless a runner reaches safely.

Managers also begin a postseason game with two replay challenges instead of the one used in a regular-season game.
