The red brick in Petco Park's left-field corner gives you a good place to start looking. The Western Metal Supply building was already here when baseball arrived, and the park found a way to keep it in the picture. Around it, pale stone and open views make a very different sort of building. Together, they give Petco a character that is easy to recognize.
The Padres play in downtown San Diego's East Village, close to the Gaslamp Quarter and the waterfront. That makes the hours around the game unusually inviting. You can have lunch in the city, walk into baseball, and still feel connected to the streets outside.
Look closely at the left-field corner
The former Western Metal warehouse now forms part of the ballpark's boundary. Its windows and brickwork make a pleasing companion to all the open grass. It is worth looking at from more than one part of the park; the relationship between the old building and the field changes as you move.
The light sandstone elsewhere has a local purpose, too. San Diego's tourism board says it recalls the coastal bluffs at places such as Torrey Pines and Sunset Cliffs. Once you know that, the park's pale colors feel well chosen.
Make a stop for Mr. Padre
Tony Gwynn Terrace gives the park a place to spend time with its best-loved player. The statue stands above a tunnel where visitors can learn more about Gwynn's life and career. A fan who knows his batting average can find something new here; a child meeting his name for the first time has somewhere to begin.
The surrounding Gallagher Square includes a playground and a small baseball field for children. For a family visit, that can be a welcome part of the outing before everyone settles into watching the larger game.

Bring an appetite for the city
A Baja fish taco makes sense at a San Diego game. The Draft by Ballast Point serves a version with battered fish, cabbage, pico de gallo, and chipotle sauce.
