At Dodger Stadium, the setting deserves a little of your attention before the lineup does. The ballpark is cut into the hills of Chavez Ravine, with downtown Los Angeles to the south and the San Gabriel Mountains to the north. Take a moment to find your bearings. This is a large city, and you have reached a rather special place to look across it.
Then there is the field: broad, bright, and familiar from so many broadcasts. Seeing it in person adds the things television leaves out, from the distance between decks to the people arriving in every shade of Dodgers blue.
The trip up is part of the plan
The Dodger Stadium Express is worth considering even if you have a car. Metro boards the Union Station service on the station's west side, facing Alameda Street, and drops passengers behind center field. That makes Union Station a useful place to join the game-day crowd.
The hill matters if you are thinking of walking from a nearby rail stop. Metro describes the route from Chinatown Station as an uphill walk of about 1.2 miles. Choose that with your group in mind, or let the bus handle the climb.
Pause with Robinson and Koufax
Centerfield Plaza includes statues of Jackie Robinson and Sandy Koufax. A brief stop can become a good conversation with a younger fan: what a player did, why people remember it, and why a team carries those stories into each new season.

One of the park's more surprising objects is the Japanese stone lantern on the Top Deck. Presented to the Dodgers in 1965, it points to a relationship with Japanese baseball that began long before today's stars arrived.

Let dinner be a Dodger Dog
The Dodger Dog is a perfectly good way to join the occasion. There are more elaborate ways to eat at a game, but a hot dog suits the business of sitting down with friends and turning your attention toward the field.
For a meal before you head uphill, nearby Chinatown and Echo Park offer other ways to spend the early part of the day. Either choice leaves the same welcome stretch ahead: the players warming up, the stands filling, and that first clear view of a pitch from your own place in the park.
