A swimming pool beyond right field is a fine introduction to Chase Field. Somewhere between watching a pitcher work and wondering whether a home run could reach the water, the place begins to make sense. Phoenix has found its own way to spend a summer evening at the ballpark.
The scale is part of the appeal. There is a whole roof overhead, a great deal of room around the diamond, and a downtown neighborhood outside the gates. A Diamondbacks game can be the middle of a pleasant city day, with something to eat before it and a long stretch of baseball after.
Look up before the first pitch
Chase Field's retractable roof is an enormous part of its character. The building holds six levels, and looking up from the seating bowl gives you some sense of the work involved in putting a roof over a baseball field.
For someone used to small outdoor parks, that first view can be half the fun. Let your eyes travel from the grass to the upper seats and back. Once the pitcher starts, the same familiar game fits comfortably inside all that space.

Heritage Square is a useful place to begin a Phoenix afternoon. Its preserved houses and commercial buildings offer a much smaller scale than the stadium nearby. Pizzeria Bianco occupies a historic brick building there, so pizza and a look around the square can make a good start before baseball.
Check the restaurant's hours and allow for the meal when setting your game-day plans. The pleasure is having time to talk over lunch, then arriving at a completely different sort of gathering a little later.
